This panel brings together perspectives from Goodwill Industries of San Diego County, San Diego College of Continuing Education, a student-turned-entrepreneur, and a local retail operator to discuss how cross-sector collaboration and innovation transform social impact into sustainable economic outcomes. Through real-world examples and lived experience, panelists will highlight how education, creativity, and entrepreneurship can align with market demand to create meaningful workforce pathways, support local businesses, and build resilient communities.

Aligning Mission and Market to Build Local Economies explores how purpose-driven organizations and creative entrepreneurs can work together to strengthen local economies while staying true to their missions. Moderated by Darlene Cossio, Goodwill San Diego leader and marketing strategist, this panel brings together voices from education, design, and small business to examine how innovation, collaboration, and storytelling turn social impact into sustainable outcomes.

Shirley Pierson, MFA, Associate Professor and Program Chair of Clothing and Textiles at San Diego College of Continuing Education, will share how education and workforce pathways prepare students to respond to real-world market needs. Entrepreneur Sheila Kirschenbaum, creator of an accessible mending kit, will discuss designing for repair, longevity, and consumer engagement. Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski, designer and owner of Sew Loka Retail, will highlight how local production and ethical fashion support community resilience. Madeline Lascola-Hutcherson, Sustainability and Wellness Coordinator for Goodwill Industries of San Diego County.
