Sophie Hahn

Vice Mayor Sophie Hahn represents the 5th District on the Berkeley City Council. She is the author of Berkeley’s recently adopted Single Use Foodware and Litter Reduction Ordinance that has been cited as a model approach to reducing throw-away foodware and transitioning to reusables. Deeply committed to environmental work, Vice Mayor Hahn has authored legislation to legalize and facilitate urban agriculture and implement high green building standards, and worked to bring 100% renewable energy to Alameda County through the establishment of East Bay Community Energy. She co-sponsored Berkeley’s Climate Emergency Declaration and Electrification Ordinance, which requires all new buildings to be electric-only, is Chair of the Sierra Club, Northern Alameda County Group and runs an urban farm and CSA from her own backyard in North Berkeley. Vice Mayor Hahn received her BA in History from UC Berkeley and a JD from Stanford Law School. Prior to being elected to the Berkeley City Council, she practiced law; worked for a major international women’s health organization; started, ran and sold a small business; raised three children; and served on many civic boards and commissions.
