Currently consulting on strategic sustainability, over his career Ryan McMullan has led several sustainability and zero waste programs including the Mattress Recycling Council, Toyota’s Corporate Responsibility department and Rice University’s Facilities & Engineering department. These have included shifting cultures from recycling to focus on reduce and reuse, establishing new recycling programs, and using zero waste concepts to project environmental benefits and cost savings across a value chain.
He founded the Texas College & University Recycling Council, helped create the TRUE Zero Waste Certification, and was a delegate member to the National Recycling Coalition’s policy summit on Sustainable Materials Management.
He earned his Masters from the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara and his Bachelor’s from Rice University. Recently, he keeps busy eliminating waste at home in Long Beach, California, teaching his 13-year-old son to conserve resources and design games, and doing guest lectures at universities.
