Joanie Burns

Joanie Burns is an Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability Manager at Amgen, Inc. in Thousand Oaks, California. She has 27 years of environmental policy and planning experience, working with a wide range of public and private sector organizations in the U.S. and internationally. Ms. Burns was involved in the development of some of Europe’s first EPR Directives, including the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and the End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive. She has also developed and delivered waste reduction and recycling/composting programs for public sector agencies/institutions and businesses with aggressive sustainability goals. This includes coordination and oversight of waste audits, evaluation of service contracts to identify inefficiencies and cost-saving opportunities, assistance with finding alternative vendors to improve performance and reduce costs, and development of outreach and education campaigns aimed at changing behavior. Joanie is responsible for waste and materials management at Amgen’s headquarters in Thousand Oaks, including identifying and implementing projects to achieve Amgen’s commitment to reduce waste disposed by 75% by 2027.
Joanie holds a Master of Science in Environmental Protection from the Institute of Technology in Sligo, Ireland and an MBA with an emphasis on Sustainable Business from California Lutheran University. She is also a certified Sustainable Resource Manager and a TRUE Advisor.
